Kids' Fishing Day set for May 1

The Yerington Lions Club, in cooperation with the Nevada Department of Wildlife, will host the first ever Mason Valley Kids' Fishing Day on Saturday, May 1, at one of the settling ponds immediately adjacent to the Mason Valley Fish Hatchery.
The event will be open to youngsters from 3-11 years of age, with 9-11-year-olds fishing between 8:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m., 6--8 year-olds fishing between 9:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. and 3--5-year-olds fishing between 11:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon.
Prizes will be awarded to the first boy and first girl to catch fish in each age group, and every youngster will receive a prize for participating in the event.
The Lions Club and NDOW are promoting this event as a special opportunity for families to enjoy a day of fishing, since adults will also be allowed to fish in some of the ponds on the property.
The limit for fishermen that day will be three fish of any size and specie, and any bait will be allowed with the exception of fish or parts of fish.
Although a limited amount of loaner equipment will be available, participants are encouraged to bring their own gear, including a way to transport their catch home.
Hot dogs, chips and beverages will also be available during the derby.
For those unfamiliar with the area, the fish hatchery is located at the Mason Valley Wildlife Management Area, which is located north of town off of Miller Lane. Anyone with questions about the Kids' Fishing Day is encouraged to call the NDOW office at 463-7816.
